Collaboration Creates Community

20/20 Seed Labs Research & Development, Seed Health 2020Seedlabs, KaizenLAB

How working together helps everyone grow!

By Shanyn Silinski, Marketing Manager

The 20/20 Seed Labs Inc. team has been collaborating with KaizenLAB for over ten years. We recently chatted with Carleen Scott, Client Services Supervisor, about the relationship between the two companies.

With a similar pedigree and origin story, the two are aligned in their business philosophies and approach to evolving client requirements. Both organizations started small, with a desire to meet clients where they were, quite literally, and both have grown to serve their clients and communities across the country.  While they have sister companies in Trinidad and Guyana (Kaizen Environmental Services), KaizenLAB is proudly Albertan with one lab location in Calgary and a staffed depot location in Edmonton.

We have customers from a wide range of industries looking for testing,” says Scott, “We know that 20/20 Seed Labs offers a high level of service, competitive pricing and quick turnaround times. Their team has consistently delivered as expected or better.”

Both labs hold very high standards and are accredited, which makes their collaboration beneficial and seamless for clients. They can rest assured that their testing will be handled with care and an eye on quality.

KaizenLAB and 20/20 Seed Labs pride themselves on being able to deliver testing as promised, when promised, with high standards of quality and customer care.

Out-of-the-box thinking leads to innovation.

KaizenLAB’s team was excited when approached about the virtual chain of custody for sample pre-entry. Certain key clients submit large sample numbers with specific testing requirements. Being able to pre-enter the information directly into the LMS (Lab Management System) that is proprietary to 20/20 Seed Labs has several key benefits.

Large numbers of samples can increase the opportunity for errors. With the virtual chain of custody, that risk is reduced significantly. Using the LMS pre-entry, the sample information is then printed on a barcode attached to the sample. The lab knows in advance about the sample and requested testing, and it can be prepared before the sample arrives. The 20/20 Seed Labs sample entry team only has to scan the barcode to receive the sample, and it is quickly moved into the department doing the testing. Questions about the sample can be addressed promptly, and information can be updated digitally.

KaizenLAB’s team feels this innovative and thoughtful approach has positively impacted their clients. Scott also believes it speaks volumes about the value of high-level collaboration, where troubleshooting is proactive (before there’s an issue) rather than reactive (dealing with it afterwards). This approach reduces errors and makes sample management accessible and streamlined.

KaizenLAB – Collaboration creates community

Importance of accreditation and proficiencies

Accreditations and proficiencies are crucial to KaizenLAB and they are required to let clients know if an accredited laboratory is doing their outsourced testing. The industries they service are very regulated, and they need their testing to be done by an accredited laboratory to ensure they are meeting their reporting requirements.

Working with other accredited laboratories is a requirement in our commitment to our own quality program. As an accredited lab, we must provide our clients the right options for testing when using a competent subcontractor. Accreditation offers the assurance of accurate and defensible data, which is essential in our industry.”
– KaizenLAB Compliance Team

Ongoing proficiencies ensure the labs they collaborate with keep up with the latest skills and technology. There’s a different level of care when dealing with an accredited lab like 20/20 Seed Labs. It helps their client relationships because they can trust that the samples are being tested to very high standards with quality labs. The level of service clients receive at KaizenLAB has to be the same high quality as outsourced labs.

Good communication between the two companies ensures that the clients get more than just quality testing; they get a seamless level of service, which is so important in that trust relationship.

Scott and her team look forward to growing the collaboration and keeping working together, as both companies align with their vision and standards. They are looking forward to new ways to Never Stop Growing!

The collaboration between KaizenLAB and 20/20 Seed Labs combines the strengths of both labs, delivering seamless service, innovative solutions, and rigorous standards that clients can trust. By working together, we enhance efficiency and uphold the high level of care that our clients rely on.”
– Irene De Leon, Client Services & Marketing Coordinator

  • Step 1: Review Requirements

    Requirements for Submitting Samples

Please submit the correct sample size for the test required.

    Germination and Vigour Tests
Most tests of this type require approximately 250 grams or 1 cup of seed. For very large seeds such as some types of peas or beans, up to twice as much seed may be required.

    Disease and Seed Health Tests
The quantity of seed for most disease testing is the same as a germination test. Some tests with special requirements may require larger amounts of seed.

    Purity Tests
Test volumes for purity and % pure seed vary with crop type and are available on the purity weight form.

    Rhizobia Test
Small seeded legumes require a 1 cup sample. Large seeded legumes require a minimum 2 cup sample. Inoculant, loose peat, granules, and liquid  should be tested in the original sealed container size.

    Canadian Seed Institute Samples
Follow the CSI instructions for the crop type and the weight to be submitted. Example: Wheat, Purity = a minimum of 1 kg of seed.

    APHIS Samples
Quantities of seed to be tested for an APHIS certificate for export to the US vary with crop type. Please contact us for the correct volume required.

    Soil Samples
We test soil for clubroot and for a weed check analysis. It is preferable to have a minimum 2 cup or 1 kg sample size.

    Plant Specimens
Root samples for clubroot analysis should have only one plant per bag and other plant or leaf samples should contain an adequate amount for representation of the tissue. Please pack fresh samples with moist paper towel and drop off at lab or ship by overnight courier only. Pack in a cooler with ice packs if possible. Do not allow sample to contact ice directly.

    FLAX / TRIFFID Tests
This test requires either 1 or 2 kg of seed. Please CLICK HERE to use the FLAX SAMPLE SUBMISSION FORM for all samples and to confirm the exact amount of seed required.

If you’re still unsure of the sample size required for your test, please contact us.

  • Step 2: Packaging

    Packaging

    Printed Sample Bags

20/20 Seed Labs Inc. provides printed sample bags to all of our customers so they may submit samples with all the information clearly noted. As well, you can use packaging or bags from other labs if necessary.

    Special Requirements

Some samples require special packaging to ensure the sample’s integrity is not compromised during shipping. Please determine if your sample may require any of the following procedures to keep the sample in proper condition.

    Ice Packs

For samples that need to remain cool during shipping, such as seed or inoculant samples for rhizobia testing.

    Heavy-duty Sealed Poly Bags

Samples requiring moisture testing should be in a container that will reduce the risk of moisture loss that could cause a change in the sample quality from time of shipping to the time of testing.
